Crick SmithThe Church of St. James the Less and the adjacent almshouses were built in the Victorian Gothick revival style in the 1870s. The interior of the church was decorated by the Powell brothers of Leeds, and this decorative scheme included a series of frescoes and stencilled designs, with the ceiling painted red and gold.
As the church no longer has a viable congregation, it is in the process of being made redundant as a place of worship. The St James the Less Building Preservation Trust was set up in 2004 to secure the future of the church as an arts-based community centre. Crick Smith were contacted to conduct an architectural paint research exercise on the interior, to advise on suitable colour schemes and to investigate the feasability of revealing the original decoration which had been overpainted.
Paint sampling showed that the original decoration still existed underneath modern paint layers, and the ongoing process of revealing this stencilled decoration is being undertaken by Crick Smith.
