Crick SmithThe Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded in 1682 by King Charles II with the intention of providing 'succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war'. Built by Sir Christopher Wren between 1682 and 1692, The Pensioners' Club is a Grade I listed building.
Crick Smith were commissioned by Wish London to date several of the interior's wooden fielded panels by using architectural paint research. It was believed that some of these panels may be original features, and as plans are in place to alter the interior layout of the building it is vital to understand the date of those panels that may be removed or altered.
Small samples of paint (including substrate) were removed from the panels in question, and from other selected areas known to be of the Wren period (in particular the staircase), to provide a reference point for comparison.
