Beaumont House Chapel forms part of the Beaumont House Hotel owned by the hotel chain Principal Hayley. Whilst the history of Beaumont is believed to go back to the 14th century what remains of the historic part of the hotel, dates from the late 18th century and is now the focus of the Beaumont House Hotel.

In 1861 the house was converted into a Roman Catholic College (St. Stanislaus College, Beaumont) and new buildings were added. One of them, the Chapel was built in 1870 by J.A. Hansom and altered later by J.F. Bentley. By the early 20th century a polychrome marouflage decorative scheme was added by Romaine-Walker and Besant.

Modifications during the 1970’s saw the highly decorative and significant Romaine Walker scheme covered over and the Chapel split into two separate levels obliterating the skillfully applied decoration on the walls, barrel vaulted ceiling and reredos. The refurbishment programme was informed by an architectural paint research exercise provided by Crick Smith. We also discovered that not only was the Chapel ceiling in a remarkably good condition but that it would also be possible to uncover the majority of the historic walls, side aisle surfaces and reredos.

Our team of skilled conservators undertook the applied treatment programme to reinstate the Romaine-Walker scheme, cleaning, compensating for losses and consolidating friable, salt encrusted surfaces. In some cases new canvasses were painted to complete the schemes. However, care was taken not to over intervene and damage the natural patina of the surfaces.

The integrity of the historic material was considered at every stage and original surfaces were reinstated wherever feasible. In some areas, they were safely protected by new coverings for consideration at a later date.

The newly revealed Chapel truly reflects and embraces its historic origins whilst offering a usable space for today’s use.
