In recognition of his work for the poor a marble bust was commissioned and paid for by 80,000 factory workers, mainly women and children. It was presented to Mrs Mundella upon his death in 1897.

Displayed in the Bromley House Subscription Library, Nottingham, this white marble bust had become detached from its socle (base), and the iron dowel which joined the two pieces together was badly corroded.  The bust was very dirty with traces of crayon and felt tip pen that had earlier defaced the object. The broken socle had been poorly repaired in the past with a discoloured adhesive and had many chips around the edge requiring filling. The gold inscription had become badly worn and difficult to read.

Specialist conservator Michael Crick Smith repaired the bust and cleaned the marble.  The inscription was then re-gilded and the bust re-assembled before being returned to the Library.
