Textile Conservation
By applying conservation standards we undertake a sensitive approach to the treatment of textiles. In conjunction with our conservation partners we are able to offer a comprehensive range of treatment programmes and advice.
Crick Smith’s expertise is not limited to caring for textiles in their ‘pure’ form as textiles are generally found to have additional materials applied to them such as metals, glass, plastics, bone, ivory, paper and leather to name a few. These can be applied as decorative features or used as backings and supports. In addition a textile may be applied onto or over an object. In these cases, treating textiles is a highly complex undertaking. Treating textiles is then a highly complex undertaking. We take into consideration all these factors and offer a service for the treatment of textiles and textile related objects. Our well equipped laboratories are able to accommodate a range of treatments for small textile items such as simple costumes and cloth shoes, embroideries, samplers, lace and crochet items, other decorative items and fabric covered objects.
Treatment Programmes Available
- Research and analysis to determine, fibres, weaves and dyes.
- Research into establish historic background, cultural context and significance cleaning.
- Dry or solvent cleaning.
- Backing to strengthen fragile textiles or support textiles for display or framing.
- Repairing tears, loose or deteriorated fibres.
- Support Systems. We can make bespoke supports and packaging to enable the correct storage and/or display for textiles and costumes to prevent stress, creasing, folding or tearing of delicate items.
