3D laser scanning is particularly useful for archive purposes, providing a 3 dimensional record, to scale and providing the opportunity for the collection of 3D evidence. There is no contact with the object, so avoiding contamination or the risk of damage. This technology may be used to produce virtual objects and exhibitions based on the internet or even replicate historic objects providing a more tactile display for the disabled or visually impaired either in a museum or historic house environment.

Rare and delicate objects can be scanned in and custom made mounts produced for display purposes and packaging materials that perfectly follow the contours of an object, providing unparalleled structural support, so reducing risks. Coupled with this technology is the technique of rapid prototyping.

Rapid prototyping has the capability of reproducing three dimensional objects to perfect scale and in colour. It can also be used to scan in damaged objects, and with operator intervention this technology can faithfully reproduce complete replicas. The damaged object is first scanned and processed as a mesh file to capture shape and form, then imported into CAD software to be digitally rebuilt prior to export to an appropriate 3D printer.
