Painted surfaces often deteriorate due to exposure to the elements, mechanical wear and tear, poor building maintenance or unsympathetic past treatments. Historic decorative schemes have frequently been subsequently over painted and Crick Smith have a wealth of experience in uncovering, restoring and if necessary replicating historic decorative finishes, including: woodgraining, marbling, gilding and restoring and reinstating complex finishes.

A typical treatment programme may include:

  • Thorough photographic recording
  • Cleaning
  • Careful consolidation of friable surfaces with attention made to retaining the historic fabric
  • Gap filling using appropriate conservation grade materials
  • Colour matching with suitable reversible pigments (and gilding) to blend in with surrounding areas
  • Application of protective coatings if appropriate

Another of our great strengths is archival research. Sometimes an historic decorative finish may have been completely lost requiring complete replication and reinstatement. At times like this thorough and informed archival research will shed light on the nature of lost schemes providing an opportunity for faithful replication, which we are able to undertake for you.
