Following 9 years in stone conservation specialising in polychrome sculpture, Ian completed a degree in Conservation and Restoration at De Montfort University, Lincoln. Upon graduation together with Michael, he took up an internship at the Architectural Paint Research Unit with English Heritage. Within the Crick Smith team, Ian takes a lead in client liaison and project management. He helps clients to understand what questions can be asked through the research process and negotiates the methodology accordingly. Ian also specialises in colour theory and recording and takes a lead in advising clients on recreation or reinstatement of decorative schemes.
